Turkey Chaos: Here's Why The Protests Are Growing

Reports of vicious police crackdown on protests in Istanbul, Turkey and other Turkish cities in response to a government many protesters have labeled "fascist" and "totalitarian" in nature.

The bloody protests (some media outlets have now labeled them as outright riots) were originally sparked in response to unfavorable government/police response to a small protest organized to prevent the destruction of a popular park in Istanbul, which was to be redeveloped into a shopping mall.

CNN reports at least 939 protesters have been detained at this time; there are reports that Twitter and Facebook access within Turkey may be restricted or under "darkout." Numerous social media accounts have surfaced of protesters with severe bodily injuries, claimed to have been caused by clashes with police forces within Turkey.

As the protests intensify, many within Turkey claim their newspapers and broadcast networks are not adequately covering the scope and importance of these events.

The proposals, included in UNCTAD's annual Trade and Development Report , amount to the most radical suggestions for redesigning the global monetary system.

Although many economists have pointed out that the economic crisis owed more to the malfunctioning of the post-Bretton Woods system, until now no major institution, including the G20 , has come up with an alternative. The goal is for the G20 to transform the International Monetary Fund (IMF) into a global Federal Reserve System. It is the Federal Reserve System which has controlled the U.S. money supply since 1914. The Federal Reserve System has nothing to do with the "Federal" government. It is a secretive and private corporation owned by international banking interests who control our political system, economy and money. In short, since 1914 the U.S. Government ended being a government run by "we the people" and has been under the control of international bankers. In an effort to up the ante in Syria and force the United States to intervene militarily, the British government on Wednesday sent a letter to United Nations boss Ban ki-moon alleging three new incidents of the al-Assad regime using chemical weapons against so-called rebels. The British and French have yet to provide conclusive evidence that the Syrian regime has in fact used chemicals weapons. Due to a lack of evidence, the Obama administration has balked on using military force in Syria. "Although there is little sign of the UN investigations team declaring chemical weapons have been used, western governments say that reporting of such incidents keeps up pressure on the Assad government and could deter it from large-scale use of chemical weapons," The Guardian reported on Wednesday. "There is increasingly strong evidence of localized use of chemical weapons," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius claimed on Monday. "We are consulting with our partners to see what concrete consequences that we are going to draw from this."

Israel warned Thursday that it needed to prepare for a "new era" of war in the Middle East as the Syrian regime claimed the first shipment of anti-aircraft missiles from Russia had arrived.

Speaking at the conclusion of a five-day civil defense drill that simulated missile attacks from Syria, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel "must prepare defensively and offensively for the new era of warfare."

His remarks come as fighting between the rebels and Syrian military continued Thursday in the town of Qusair near the border with Lebanon. The Syrian army Wednesday took control of nearby Dabaa air base with the help of hundreds of Hezbollah militants.

The region is important to rebels who use it to transport supplies to their fighters. If lost would be a significant setback for the opposition, which has controlled the region for a year.
