Before the US went to Afghanistan heroin in the US was on the lower end of the abused drug spectrum seeing a huge decline since its peak in the 60's. After the US went to Afghanistan heroin abuse rose across the board across the US. It's because our military took control over the poppy fields and realized trafficking heroin was just as profitable as oil, if not more.
