Obama: the Food Stamp President

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as "food stamps", served nearly 27 million children in 2011-- putting the number to one in four children living in the United States.

The new statistics released by the US Department of Agriculture and US Census Bureau indicate a growing trend in the number of people, specifically children, using programs such as SNAP.

Indeed, the increase of the food stamp program has risen with spending that has been doubled in the last four years and quadrupled since 2001.

Approximately 15 and a half million additional recipients have been added to the SNAP rolls since the beginning of 2009. The increase in enrollment prompts the question of whether there should be reforms in how people qualify for aid.

The Obama administration has what some consider a relaxed policy for qualifying for food stamps. The president has been sharply criticized for the rise on people using food stamps in the US. One of his less-flattering of nicknames is "The Food Stamp President."
